Mogollon Monster 100

About the Event

Nestled approximately 90 minutes northeast of Phoenix, Arizona, just outside the quaint town of Pine, lies the challenging terrain of the Mogollon Rim. The Mogollon Monster 100 is an advanced endurance race that stretches across this rugged landscape for a total distance of 100 miles. This rim, which locals pronounce as "mug-ee-yun" or "muggy-own," spans over 200 miles from Arizona into New Mexico and rises abruptly out of the earth by about 2,000 feet.
The race course weaves through diverse ecosystems, starting at an elevation of around 5,500 feet and reaching up to 7,900 feet along its path. The terrain fluctuates dramatically as runners traverse from the high Sonoran Desert to dense Ponderosa Pine forests, one of the largest contiguous pine woodlands in North America.
Throughout the course, participants will encounter six distinct rim climbs totaling an impressive elevation gain of 18,000 feet. This challenging route includes sections like the Highline Trail and Donahue Trail, known for their technical difficulty and breathtaking views. The Myrtle Trail is also set to become a notable feature on this demanding course.
The race takes place in late September when temperatures typically hover around the low 70s to mid-80s below the rim but can drop significantly at night atop the rim, potentially reaching freezing conditions. Runners should be prepared for changing weather patterns, including possible thunderstorms and flash floods due to summer monsoon activity.
As part of its commitment to trail preservation, entrants in the 100-mile race are required to complete eight hours of volunteer work before race day or make a $100 donation towards local conservation efforts. This initiative aims to support ongoing maintenance projects along the Highline Trail and other vital pathways within the region.
In addition to its rigorous physical demands, the Mogollon Monster 100 stands out as an official qualifier for both Hardrock 100 in Colorado and Western States 100 in California, providing runners with a significant achievement on their ultramarathon resumes. The race offers stunning vistas, rich biodiversity, and a unique blend of challenging terrain that is sure to test even the most seasoned endurance athletes.
For detailed information including course maps, schedules, pacer guidelines, and more, visit the Mogollon Monster website. Race entries are non-refundable but can be transferred under specific conditions outlined in their withdrawal policy.
The Mogollon Rim's diverse terrain and dramatic elevation changes make this event a must for any serious ultramarathon runner looking to push their limits while experiencing some of Arizona’s most spectacular natural beauty.
