The Montane Adventure Race, set to host the ARWS European Championship in 2026, invites teams to explore Denmark’s diverse landscapes through an exhilarating mix of disciplines. Located around Copenhagen, this race offers runners and adventurers a unique blend of trailrunning, mountain biking, climbing, caving, biathlon, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, diving, and more. Teams will navigate wild forests, coastal paths, rural trails, and waterways in a 36-hour competition (with an open window for up to 48 hours), pushing their limits under the longer summer days. Organized by Lars Bukkehave, who has been at the helm of this event since its inception 18 years ago, the course is renowned for its challenging and surprising elements. Past editions have featured a labyrinthine obstacle, navy seal training exercises, an old fighter jet-studded airport visit, and even hidden maps inside candy canes. Each year brings new surprises, including extensive climbing sections like tree climbs and rappels from high vantage points. This summer edition will offer international teams the convenience of airport pickup in Copenhagen along with basic accommodation and meals before and after the event, allowing participants to focus entirely on the challenge ahead. The winning Premier Mixed Team of four will qualify directly for the 2027 Adventure Racing World Championship, adding an extra layer of prestige. For those new or younger racers, there’s also a shorter 8-hour Challenge course (with a maximum duration of 15.5 hours) designed to introduce adventure racing in a more manageable format. Both the championship and challenge courses come with comprehensive support packages including race maps on waterproof paper, roadbooks, water crafts like canoes and kayaks, as well as finish line buffets and sponsor goodie bags. Participants will not only experience Denmark’s natural beauty but also benefit from professional logistics and receive memorable keepsakes such as ARWS Race bibs and exclusive merchandise. This event promises an unforgettable adventure for all levels of racers, setting the stage for a summer to remember in Copenhagen. The Montane Adventure Race is more than just a race; it's a journey through Denmark’s diverse terrain and culture, offering participants the chance to explore new challenges while making lasting memories.

About Copenhagen
Learn more about the host city, Copenhagen.
Copenhagen is the capital city of Denmark and forms the moderate conurbation that one million Danes call home. It is big enough to form a small Danish metropolis, with shopping, culture and nightlife par excellence, yet small enough still to feel intimate and be safe. Although mixed in its urban scene, the city is easy to navigate. Overlooking the Øresund Strait, connected to Sweden by a 15-km bridge-tunnel. Copenhagen serves as a cultural and geographic link between the Nordic countries and central Europe. Copenhagen is where old fairy tales blend with flashy modern architecture and world-class design; where warm jazz mixes with crisp electronica from Copenhagen's basements. You could feel you have seen all of Copenhagen in one day, but further exploration will keep you discovering more for months.
