The Mount Ascutney Vertical Backyard returns to Brownsville, Vermont on November 21st, challenging runners and fast hikers alike with an endurance test that lasts as long as they can manage it, from a few hours up to potentially a full day. This unique event takes place in the heart of the Green Mountains, near Mount Ascutney itself, where participants will climb steep vertical ascents every hour until only one person remains standing.
Race morning starts at 9:00 AM sharp with clear views down into Brownsville and beyond as runners begin their ascent up Ski Tow Road. The terrain is rugged but scenic, offering a mix of forest paths and open slopes leading to the summit. With two distinct routes available—one shorter and easier via T-bar path (403 feet gain per hour) or one longer loop with higher elevation gains (1209 feet)—participants can choose their challenge level based on experience and endurance goals.
Since its inception, Mount Ascutney Vertical Backyard has become a cornerstone of the local running community in Brownsville. It attracts around 90 participants each year who test their limits against both time and altitude. The event raises funds for two important causes: the Ascutney Outdoors Center and the Ascutney Trails Association, with five percent of entry fees donated to each organization annually.
The course itself is a rigorous loop through varied terrain on Mount Ascutney's slopes, featuring firm yet slightly soft trail conditions that can range from rocky outcrops to snow-covered paths in late November. Runners will face significant elevation changes every hour as they ascend and descend 1209 feet per lap for the longer route or approximately half that distance via T-bar path. Aid stations are positioned at key points along Ski Tow Road, offering hot food and indoor facilities including bathrooms throughout the day.
