The Ullswater Way, introduced in October 2016 shortly after its creation at Easter of the same year, invites runners and walkers alike to explore two distinct routes around Lake Ullswater: a scenic 20-mile journey or an adventurous 24-mile challenge. The longer route takes participants on a high-level fell path from Glenridding through Glencoyne to Gowbarrow, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape in clear weather. Starting and finishing at Parkin Memorial Hall in Pooley Bridge (CA10 2NH), both routes follow a clockwise direction around Ullswater. The journey begins with picturesque sections near The Cockpit, Howtown, and Hallin Fell before reaching Glenridding. At this point, participants have the option to continue along the lakeshore towards Aira Force or opt for the more challenging high-level route through Glencoyne. The higher path is subject to weather conditions; if it's not safe, all runners will follow a lower 20-mile track instead. Participants can choose their start time between 8 and 10am, with an encouragement for slower walkers to begin earlier in the morning. Throughout the race, you'll encounter various terrain types including wide tracks, narrow rocky paths, and short stretches of tarmac lane. Detailed route instructions are provided to all participants to ensure a smooth journey around Ullswater’s stunning scenery. Upon completion, runners will be greeted with free refreshments like tea, coffee, cake, and soup at the finish line. The nearby village offers several pubs and eateries for those looking to enjoy a meal or drink after their run. Participants have the option to purchase XCover insurance to secure a refund in case of unforeseen circumstances preventing them from attending. This event promises an unforgettable experience through one of England’s most beautiful landscapes, catering to both casual walkers and seasoned runners.
