Nelson Farm Weekend - Formerly Thurston Park Weekend (Maine Gravel Series)
About the Event
This July 11-12 weekend offers an exciting lineup of events for cycling and trail running enthusiasts, relocated this year from the picturesque Nelson Farm in Albion. The event kicks off with two thrilling races on Saturday: the cyclocross/mtb race and a Last-Man-Standing style trail run. The cyclocross/mtb race features one 40-minute competition with separate categories for CX and MTB riders, provided there are enough participants. Navigate through winding paths that crisscross the farm’s woods and fields on your chosen bike—gravel, mountain, or cyclocross. Prizes will be announced shortly. Following a brief break, prepare for the Last-Man-Standing trail run. The course consists of about 1-mile loops with decreasing time limits per lap: Lap 1 is set at 20 minutes, reducing by one minute each subsequent lap. Run until you can no longer make it to your cutoff! Expect around 7-8 laps if maintaining a pace close to 12 minutes per mile. Fast runners are advised to bring lights for the concluding sections; last year’s winners completed their run in just six minutes. For spectators, Albion offers an adjacent park with miles of hiking and biking trails, along with access to a large pond perfect for exploring. The grand finale on Sunday promises a memorable gravel grind that traverses through China, Palermo, Freedom, and Albion, Maine. This year’s route includes some modifications, offering closer to 70% non-pavement terrain, including several sections closed throughout the rest of the year. The exact routes are still under consideration but will likely include two options: a 28-mile and a 48-mile ride. On clear days, distant views of Mount Washington can be enjoyed in select spots along the route. An aid station is set up at approximately 16 miles for both distances to ensure you stay fueled. Participants have the option to camp on-site Saturday night, with accommodations situated in an elevated field offering views of the Presidential Range and Mount Washington if weather permits. Camping sites are conveniently located just steps away from registration and ride start areas. Weather conditions will not deter this event; it’s rain or shine! Should unforeseen circumstances force a cancellation before July 4, 2026, registrants can defer their participation to 2027 upon request. Otherwise, any unused fees will be donated to the Schmid Preserve in Edgecomb. Brought together by Six Rivers NEMBA and friends, this event promises an unforgettable weekend of adventure, camaraderie, and natural beauty.
