No Hands Heavy Half Trail Run invites runners to experience the rugged beauty and legendary challenges of California’s historic Western States trail. Since its inception as an instant classic in 2021, this race has expanded with additional distances, offering a variety of adventures for all levels. The event takes place at American River Overlook Park and features four distinct courses: the 8K, Heavy Half Marathon (13.1 miles), 35K, and 50K. Each distance presents its own unique combination of terrain, scenery, and excitement along the banks and canyons of the American River. Runners will start their journey by following historic trails out to “No Hands Bridge,” a well-known landmark that sets the stage for what’s ahead. The route then ventures onto single-track paths winding through scenic landscapes before tackling K2 training hill, one of the toughest climbs in the area. After cresting this formidable ascent and heading towards Cool, CA, participants will face Overlook Hill to reach the finish line. For those seeking an extended adventure, the 50K runners continue beyond No Hands Bridge, crossing Highway 49 into the Wendell T. Robie trail within Auburn State Recreation Area. This added mileage provides a diverse landscape and further challenges for endurance enthusiasts. The race is designed with varied terrain to keep participants engaged throughout their journey. Despite its demanding nature, each course offers moments of respite on flat stretches that allow runners to reflect on their progress before pushing onward through more challenging sections. Aid stations are strategically placed along the route, equipped with a wide range of products including Gu Energy gels and chews, trail mix, pretzels, potato chips, Oreo cookies, Skratch Labs hydration mixes, PB&J sandwiches, M&M’s, salt tablets, bananas, watermelon, tangerines, Coke, Ginger Ale, and more. These stations are crucial for refueling with optimal glycogen-replenishing and electrolyte-replacing options. Participants can check in early on January 8th at Fleet Feet Roseville or opt to do so race morning starting from 6:45 AM onwards. The event offers staggered start times based on distance, ensuring a smooth flow of runners throughout the day: - 50K & 35K: Start time is set for 7:30 AM - Heavy Half Marathon (13.1 miles): Starts at 8:00 AM - 8K: Begins promptly at 8:30 AM Parking and Carpooling: Free parking is available within American River Overlook Park, as well as on adjacent streets.
