Operation Obstacle 2026 returns to Decatur, Illinois on September 19th for its sixth year as a community event supporting veteran suicide prevention. The race will take place at the Richland Community College campus grounds, located just off Main Street and adjacent to the Decatur Arboretum Park. Race morning in early autumn brings cool temperatures with an average high of 26 degrees Celsius and lows around 16 degrees, making for comfortable conditions on a mostly flat course. The atmosphere is one of camaraderie and remembrance as participants navigate through 25 obstacles designed to challenge both body and spirit. This includes carrying and pulling objects over short distances, army net crawls, and navigating various physical barriers. Operation Obstacle has been running since its inception in 2021, raising awareness for veteran suicide prevention with every passing year. In the past five years alone, thousands of participants have taken part, contributing significantly to local efforts aimed at supporting our nation's heroes. The event is a testament to community spirit and solidarity. The course venue will offer an obstacle-filled journey through Richland Community College’s expansive grounds. Participants will experience varied terrain from soft grassy paths to slightly rocky stretches, ensuring a dynamic yet manageable challenge. There are three corrals: competitive, semi-competitive, and non-competitive, catering to all skill levels and pace preferences. At the finish line, you’ll receive a celebratory challenge coin and goodie bag as part of your completion package. All proceeds support Richland Community College's Student Veterans' Resource Center. The race is free for participants under 18 years old who wish to walk or jog through parts of the course without completing all obstacles. Registration opens online only at https://raceroster.com/events/2026/118149/operation-obstacle-2026, with a deadline set for September 13th. T-shirt sizes are available during registration and cutoff by that date as well. Help spread the word on social media to earn an additional 5% off fees for every registrant you refer. Bibs can be picked up at Richland Community College’s athletics office from 9am-4pm starting September 12th, with a requirement of bringing valid ID and proof of age (born before January 1st, 2008). First-timers should also bring water bottles for hydration during the event. The race starts promptly at 7:30 am on Main Street near the college campus. Participants under 18 years old may join in with a non-competitive corral option to jog or walk through parts of the course without completing all obstacles, making it an inclusive experience for everyone.
Operation Obstacle 2026 aims to continue its mission by raising awareness and supporting local veteran services. Its return this September is not just a race but a powerful statement in solidarity with our nation's heroes.
