About the Event

Chariton, Iowa, invites you to an exhilarating adventure through its scenic countryside with Outland Races – a unique gravel cycling experience that promises both challenge and camaraderie. No USA Cycling license is required for registration; simply sign up early to support the event organization and ensure smoother race logistics.
Participants can pick up their packets from 7:30 AM at Fletch Invest, located at 119 N. Main St., Chariton, IA 50049. Race day starts with pre-race announcements ten minutes before each wave of riders. The first group, the 100K Riders, stages and departs from the starting line at 8:50 AM and 9:00 AM respectively. Sixty Kilo riders follow a bit later, staging at 9:20 AM and starting their journey at 9:30 AM.
The courses are adventure routes that will test your navigation skills; no route markings are provided on the day of the race. It is essential to download detailed course information well in advance from https://www.outlandraces.com/outlandgravel, as printed maps won’t be available. Be prepared for any weather conditions – rain or shine, you may encounter sections where hiking and biking will alternate.
Post-race festivities include a raffle and celebration, with more details to come closer to the event date. Outland Races are designed as an inclusive adventure for all skill levels, ensuring a memorable challenge that’s both welcoming and unforgettable.
For those looking to extend their stay or explore local accommodations, Stevens State Forest offers camping directly on the course route. Newly renovated Red Haw State Park should be open by July with full amenities like hookups, showers, restrooms, and lake access. For more conventional options, consider Lucas County Fairgrounds (with $20 per night rates) or Country Cabins near a state park and bait shop.
Please note that riding is allowed on horse trails but exercise caution as these areas are not commonly used by cyclists. Follow all road rules and be courteous to local residents who may not expect frequent encounters with bikes in their neighborhoods.
