Pajarito Mountain Run

About the Event

Escape the Summer Heat with High Alpine New Mexico Trail Running, an exhilarating grassroots trail run designed for those seeking high-altitude adventure and scenic beauty. Nestled in the picturesque River Grande Valley, this race offers runners the chance to explore some of the finest trails while enjoying a cooler climate.
The event takes place at Pajarito Mountain Ski Area and the charming town of Los Alamos, where history meets nature. From prehistoric times to modern scientific advancements, Los Alamos is steeped in discovery and innovation, making it an ideal location for both adventure seekers and those interested in local culture. The ski area itself was built entirely by volunteers who continue their dedication today.
Participants will play a crucial role in trail stewardship during the race, helping to maintain these pristine paths by ensuring that no trash remains behind after crossing each checkpoint. This commitment to environmental preservation is integral to the event's ethos and ensures that future runners can enjoy equally clean trails.
The course itself promises an unforgettable challenge with its 3.25-mile route featuring a steep ascent up Pajarito Mountain, reaching over 10,200 feet in elevation. Runners will start near the Lodge before tackling a rolling mile of Singletrack on Lower Aspenola Trail and then ascending via Service Road to reach the summit aid station around three miles into the race. From there, they'll descend through "Aspen For Trouble" trail, weaving their way back down towards the finish line.
The route is meticulously marked with yellow flagging, arrows, and directional signs at key intersections, making navigation straightforward for all participants. With no time limits imposed on runners, hikers are also welcome to join in and enjoy this scenic journey through diverse terrain.
Registration fees vary based on timing: $65 before July 31st, $75 between August 1st-14th, and $80 on race day (cash only). Participants who register early have until August 10th for guaranteed t-shirt sizing. Refunds are available up to 21 days prior to the event; within this period, a credit of half your registration fee can be applied towards future events.
Race packets will be distributed at Pajarito Lodge from 8-8:45 AM on race morning, and the start time is set for precisely 9:00 AM. Racers are encouraged to bring their own hydration vessels to reduce waste during this scenic journey through New Mexico's high country.
Join us in celebrating trail running at its finest as you immerse yourself in the stunning landscapes of Pajarito Mountain, where every step offers a new view and an unparalleled sense of accomplishment.

About Los Alamos

Learn more about the host city, Los Alamos.

Scenic view of

Los Alamos is a small town in northern New Mexico, about an hour northwest of Santa Fe. Its claim to fame is the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), where Oppenheimer and other physicists created the world's first atomic bomb during World War II, concluding the Golden Age of Modern Physics and heralding the Atomic Age. Many of Los Alamos's 12,000 residents work at the laboratory. White Rock, with about 6,000, is a part of Los Alamos, but is separated from the main town by LANL. Nearly all of LANL is closed to the public, but the town has a couple of museums which are good places to learn about the history of the town.
