Pilot Mountain Goat

Pilot Mountain Goat Race invites runners of all levels to conquer the rugged terrain and scenic trails at Pilot Mountain State Park. The 7-mile course offers an exhilarating challenge, while the more moderate 3-mile option is perfect for those looking to experience the mountain's beauty without pushing too far beyond their limits.
The race begins in the heart of the park’s campground with a wide gravel trail leading runners through lush greenery and rocky outcroppings. Participants will navigate Grindstone Trail, ascending steep inclines that test both strength and endurance. The 7-mile route extends further around the mountain's backside via Mountain Trail before returning to join the shorter course near the summit.
Both distances culminate at the upper parking lot where runners can bask in their achievement atop Pilot Knob’s peak. However, the journey isn’t over yet—participants must make their way down the 2.25-mile trail either on foot or with assistance from friends and family; park rangers are unable to provide transportation.
Registration is limited to just 150 runners, so early sign-ups are essential to secure a spot in this challenging event. The first 49 vehicles will be accommodated at the campground parking area, while additional participants should plan for overflow lots nearby or carpooling arrangements.
Race day amenities include long-sleeve technical shirts and post-race breakfasts, along with awards ceremonies recognizing top finishers and age-group winners in both race lengths. Early packet pickup is available on December 18 from 4:00 to 5:30 PM outside the Visitor Center or at the starting area between 8:15 AM and 9:50 AM.
