Platter's Chocolate Factory Sponge Candy 5K & 1 Mile Fun Walk

Get ready for an unforgettable run through North Tonawanda, New York as Platter’s Chocolate Factory hosts its 9th Annual Sponge Candy 5K on September 19, 2026. This sweet celebration of fitness and community features a scenic route that winds around the newly renovated Wurlitzer Building, home to Platter's renowned chocolate factory.
Participants can choose between two events: a spirited 5K race starting at 3:30 PM or a family-friendly 1-Mile Walk kicking off just half an hour earlier. Both races will start and finish in front of the iconic building on Ohio Street, offering stunning views throughout the run. The course is certified by USATF under number NY15045.
Registration fees vary depending on when you sign up:
- $30 through May 14
- $35 from May 15 to July 31
- $40 starting August 1
Early bird registrants who complete their entry by August 31 at 9 AM will secure a custom-designed t-shirt in their preferred size. Those registering later may receive one on a first-come, first-served basis.
Race day registration and packet pickup take place inside the Wurlitzer Building from 1:00 PM until race start times. Participants also have an early option to collect their materials at Platter’s Chocolate Factory between September 18th from 4-6pm.
The event benefits Diamonds in the Ruff Animal Rescue, a local non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing and rehoming animals. Spectators can support this cause by collecting t-shirts during packet pickup or purchasing raffle baskets available throughout the week leading up to race day.
Race morning will be filled with pre-race festivities including live music performances starting at 6 PM after the races conclude, providing a perfect setting for post-run celebrations and socializing. Refreshments such as sponge candy, fruit, snacks, and bottled water will be provided both during and after the event.
Awards are given to top finishers in various age categories ranging from under 14 years old through ages 80 and above. Prizes include Platter’s Chocolate Factory gift baskets for overall male and female winners of the 5K race as well as first-place finisher among runners aged 14 and younger.
For those who cannot attend but still wish to participate, there are volunteer opportunities available on September 19th from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM. Volunteers play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of race day activities by assisting with course guidance among other duties.
In case of unforeseen circumstances such as severe weather conditions or public safety concerns, organizers reserve the right to modify schedules accordingly while also considering offering virtual alternatives where feasible.
