Dive into the challenging terrain of Portland’s unique ultramarathon experience with the 6th edition of the Portland Pig BackYard Ultra. This Bronze Ticket event invites runners to tackle an unconventional course, where each hour you must complete a lap covering exactly 4.167 miles (6,706 meters) before starting another.
The route winds through diverse landscapes that offer both scenic beauty and historical intrigue. As the sun rises and sets over Portland’s rugged coastlines, competitors will pass by two prisons, an Olympic sailing venue with breathtaking beach views, a cricket club, stone quarries adorned with intricate carvings, and even a wallaby farm and alpaca ranch. The variety of terrain—grass, gravel, track, tarmac—keeps runners on their toes throughout the event.
Camping facilities are provided onsite for competitors along with two crew members (no motorhomes allowed), ensuring you have everything needed to rest between laps. Medical support is available around the clock, and a fully marked course helps navigate this unpredictable journey. Each participant receives an impressive DNF medal should they need to withdraw at any point.
The event’s intensity varies widely: marathon enthusiasts can complete 7 loops for a more manageable distance; those aiming higher will face 24 or even 48 laps over the weekend, testing both physical endurance and mental fortitude. Previous winners have achieved remarkable feats, such as Luke Carter's back-to-back victories in 2023 with an impressive 33 yards.
