Portobello Beach Race

The Beach Race, licensed by Scottish Athletics, invites runners to experience an exhilarating 4-mile course along Portobello's sandy shores on Sunday, August 30th, 2026. Registration takes place from 9:00 am to 9:45 am at Powerleage Portobello (10 Westbank Street, Edinburgh EH15 1DR), where participants will receive their race numbers.
The route follows the beach's natural contours, starting immediately below Towerbank Primary School and heading east. Runners turn around a marker near Joppa’s pumping station before retracing their steps back west along the entire length of the beach to finish at the original start point. The event is timed for low tide when conditions are ideal, though participants should be prepared for potential detours over groynes or through shallow water.
Proceeds from this race will benefit Towerbank Primary School and other local initiatives chosen by club members, supporting equal access to extracurricular activities for all children. Entry fees of £10 can be paid online until August 28th, 2025 (closing at midnight), or on the day if spots remain available.
Awards will be presented around noon beside registration along the promenade, recognizing top finishers in both open and veteran categories. Additionally, a Kids' Fun Run kicks off shortly after 10:30 am for younger participants to enjoy.
For those traveling by car, limited parking is available at Bridge Street’s public lot or on nearby side streets; however, alternative modes of transport are encouraged due to space constraints. The area is well-connected with Lothian buses and Brunstane train station within a 20-25 minute walk from the promenade.
Toilets can be found both at Powerleage Portobello and about 200 meters west along the promenade, offering convenient rest stops during race day. A safe bag-drop area will also be provided for storing personal items while running.
Upon crossing the finish line, runners are greeted with refreshments including water, snacks, and a cake stand. The charming cafes and restaurants lining Portobello’s promenade invite participants to extend their seaside experience into an enjoyable afternoon out after the race.
