Reykjavik Spring Marathon

About the Event

Nestled within the heart of Iceland’s vibrant spring season, the Reykjavik Spring Marathon invites runners to experience one of Europe's most captivating urban landscapes. This annual race has been running for 28 years and is renowned for its warm welcome and picturesque route.
Scheduled on the third Saturday of summer in April, typically between the 21st and 27th, this event offers a unique blend of Icelandic charm and marathon spirit. The weather during this time often features sunny days with cooler temperatures, creating ideal conditions for runners to enjoy their run without the heat stress typical of warmer climates.
The race begins at Elliðaárdalur valley in eastern Reykjavik, situated near the banks of the historic Elliðaá river—a prime salmon fishing spot. Surrounded by ancient lava formations and small fissures dating back 5,500 years, this starting point sets a scenic tone for what is to come.
As runners make their way through Fossvogur valley, they pass along the border of Reykjavik and Kópavogur before turning inland towards Öskjuhlíð hill. This area was once an island during Iceland’s last ice age when sea levels were more than 40 meters higher. The route then leads back to the seaside past Berjaya Hotel and the domestic airport.
At Nauthólsvík beach, runners are treated to stunning ocean views that occasionally reveal the majestic Snæfellsjökull glacier volcano on the horizon, as well as glimpses of Bessastadir presidential residence across Faxa Bay. The marathon course then takes a U-turn in the western part of Reykjavik and retraces its steps back towards the starting point.
The full 42-kilometer route is mostly flat with minor elevation changes at around 3km and again at 4.5km, making it an enjoyable run along paved trails that are free from heavy traffic. The race organizers strive to create a friendly atmosphere for all participants, ensuring everyone feels welcome throughout the event.
Post-race festivities include warm waffles served with real cream and jam, accompanied by coffee or other refreshments—a perfect way to celebrate your achievement while soaking in Iceland’s unique culture and hospitality. Don’t miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in Reykjavik's springtime beauty and join a community of runners who share the joy of exploring one of Europe’s most enchanting cities.
The Reykjavik Spring Marathon is more than just a race; it’s an invitation to experience Iceland’s natural wonders, rich history, and warm-hearted people.

Reykjavík is the capital of and largest city in Iceland and with an urban area population of around 233,000 (2019), it is the home to two-thirds of Iceland's population. It is the centre of culture and life of the Icelandic people, and is one of the focal points of tourism in Iceland. The city is spread out, and has sprawling suburbs. The city centre, however, is a very small area characterised by eclectic and colourful houses, with good shopping, dining and drinking.
