San Juan Solstice 50

50 miles. 50 years of racing history. Snowfields, creek crossings, and the Continental Divide. The San Juan Solstice 50 returns to Lake City, Colorado, on Saturday, June 20, 2026, starting at 5:00 AM from Lake City Town Park. The lottery closed on January 31 with 300 runners selected and 285 on the waitlist. Mandatory MAProgress live tracking — every runner must carry a registered tracker (own, borrowed, or rented). Proceeds benefit Lake City EMTs. Prerequisites: 18+, prior trail ultra experience, high mountain comfort, and self‑sufficiency.

History & Tradition:

• First running: June 17, 1995 (originally Lake City 50). Snowfields prevented the full route; first year was an out‑and‑back to Williams Creek Aid Station.
• Moved to third week of July in early years, but Lake City is packed with tourists in July — no rooms, no volunteer availability. Lightning proved a significant threat on the Divide.
• In 2002, Chip and Cathy Lee turned the race over to the Lake City community as a benefit for Lake City EMTs. Renamed the San Juan Solstice 50 Mile Benefit Run for Lake City EMTs.
• Race date moved back to the vicinity of the Summer Solstice. Solstice falls on different days, so race shifts between the Saturday before or after.
• Dates before the Solstice have been problematic: high and dangerous creek crossings in Alpine Gulch, steep/long snowfields, and inaccessibility of the Divide Aid Station for crews.
• In 2014, the race fell exactly on the Solstice — the moment of Summer Solstice was about 9 minutes before the 5 AM start.
• Future races are now held after June 21, but 2026 falls on June 20 (given Colorado's low‑snow winter).

Course & Terrain:

• Starts at Lake City Town Park (elevation ~8,600 ft)
• Traverses the Continental Divide, high alpine basins, snowfields, and rugged 4WD roads
• Alpine Gulch creek crossings: in high snow years, runners report being soaked to the neck, then fighting hypothermia while climbing in shadow to the Alpine Aid Station
• Snowfields: a track may be hand‑shoveled across steep snowfields above the Alpine Aid Station to prevent sliding into rocks below
• Divide Aid Station: sometimes inaccessible by vehicles — crews must be self‑sufficient
• Lightning is a real threat — runners must monitor weather and descend if necessary

Mandatory Tracking (MAProgress):

• Every runner must carry a registered tracker (owned, borrowed, or rented)
• Runners with own or borrowed trackers must know how to operate them
• Rentals from MAProgress include printed instructions and pickup at Friday check‑in
• Registration instructions sent to lottery winners and waitlist movers

Prerequisites & Eligibility:

• Minimum age: 18 years old on race day
• Must have completed a prior trail ultra run (no first‑time ultra runners)
• Must have extensive high mountain experience and be comfortable at altitude (runs above 12,000 ft)
• Self‑sufficiency expected — aid stations may be inaccessible to crews

Aid Stations & Logistics:

• Standard San Juan Solstice aid stations (names and locations: Williams Creek, Alpine Gulch, Divide, etc. — check race website)
• Crew access limited — some stations not reachable by vehicle in high snow years
• Drop bags allowed (specific locations on race website)
• Pacers allowed? Check race rules — typically allowed after certain miles
