The Nimra Championship Short Distance Race invites runners to challenge themselves on the rugged terrain of Scrabo Country Park. With an entry limit of 120 participants, this race offers a unique and intimate racing experience that highlights both technical skill and endurance. Registration for the event takes place from 5:45 PM to 6:45 PM at the BHAC Gazebo in the upper car park area, adjacent to Scrabo Golf Club. The race itself begins promptly at 7:00 PM with a start line located just outside of Killynether Wood. Competitors will cover a distance of 6.35 kilometers (approximately 3.95 miles) over two laps on a figure-of-eight course that winds through the forest trails and singletrack paths within the park. The route is marked thoroughly with sawdust and tape, ensuring clear guidance for all participants. Runners can expect to encounter steep ascents, narrow pathways, steps, and numerous tree roots along their journey. The race's ascent totals 280 meters (918 feet), adding a significant elevation challenge that will test even the most seasoned runners. Despite this demanding terrain, safety remains paramount; marshals are stationed at major junctions and crossing points to ensure all participants follow instructions for a safe run. While there is no mandatory equipment required, organizers recommend bringing a rain jacket in case of inclement weather conditions during race day. Additionally, running poles are not permitted according to Nimra guidelines. Categories include male senior along with age-specific divisions from U18 through V80, and similarly structured female categories. All retiring runners should report to the nearest marshal’s post or return by the safest route possible before checking in at the finish line with race organizers. This event is a must for those seeking an engaging challenge amidst natural beauty, combining the thrill of competition with scenic woodland trails and challenging ascents.

About Newtownards
Learn more about the host city, Newtownards.
Newtownards is a town at the head of Strangford Lough, historically in County Down, with a population in 2021 of 29,600. The counties of Northern Ireland are no longer units of governance so since 2015 the town has been part of Ards and North Down "super-district". It has few sights of its own, but the area around the lough is dotted with natural and historic attractions. This page therefore covers the entire Ards Peninsula down to Portaferry, and the northern half of the lough. For the southwest shore of the lough see Downpatrick and Strangford.
