The race begins and concludes at Naseby Village Hall, located near historic sites like Holdenby House and Althorp Estate—the latter being Princess Diana’s final resting place. The route meanders through the county's rolling hills and lush landscapes, featuring a mix of roads and trails that showcase Northamptonshire’s diverse terrain.
What sets Shires and Spires apart is its annual directional change: every even year sees runners moving clockwise around the course, while odd years see them running in an anti-clockwise direction. This ensures each edition offers a fresh perspective and experience for participants.
### Race Distances
#### Ultra Marathon (35 miles)
This endurance test spans 35 miles of challenging terrain, combining both roads and trails. With five aid stations providing essential supplies like water, snacks, and medical support, runners are equipped to tackle the course's varied landscape. A GPS tracker with voice cues helps navigate this demanding route.
#### Marathon (26.6 miles)
At 26.6 miles long, this multi-terrain marathon offers a balance of road and trail running. With an elevation gain of +1743 feet and loss of -1743 feet, it’s sure to test your stamina while rewarding you with stunning views along the way.
#### Three-Quarter Marathon (19.1 miles)
This 19.1-mile race features a mix of road and trail running, offering runners an opportunity to explore Northamptonshire's scenic countryside without committing to longer distances. With three aid stations strategically placed throughout the route, it ensures you have all necessary support.
#### Half Marathon (13.4 miles)
The half marathon is designed for those who enjoy both speed and scenery. Covering 13.4 miles with a significant elevation change of +897 feet up and down, this race provides a challenging yet rewarding experience.
#### 10K Race
For runners looking to test their pace on undulating terrain, the 10K offers a dynamic course that includes both road running and a valley descent followed by an uphill climb. Well-marked throughout with one aid station providing water at the halfway point, this race is perfect for those aiming to push their limits.
### Race Details
Each distance has specific entry fees and age requirements:
- Ultra Marathon: £60 (on-the-day registration available for £65 in cash only)
- Marathon: £45 (£50 on-the-day registration with cash payment)
- Three-Quarter Marathon: £40 (£45 on-the-day registration with cash payment)
- Half Marathon: £35 (£40 on-the-day registration with cash payment)
- 10K Race: £24 (£30 for late registrants)
### Charity Option
Participants can opt to run as part of a charity initiative, reducing their entry fee by £10 and committing to raising funds:
- Ultra Marathon: Minimum fundraise target is £175.
- Marathon: Fundraising goal set at £125.
- Three-Quarter Marathon: Aim for £125 in donations.
- Half Marathon: Commitment of £100 raised.
- 10K Race: Goal to raise £70.
