Shires and Spires: A Scenic Running Challenge in Northamptonshire
Embark on an extraordinary running adventure at the Shires and Spires 2026, one of England’s most picturesque multi-terrain races. Winner of the MARM Race of the Year 2023, this event offers five distinct distances set against the backdrop of Northamptonshire's breathtaking countryside.
Starting from Naseby Village Hall in a village rich with historical significance—the site where the Battle of Naseby took place in 1645—participants will be immersed in stunning landscapes and charming villages. The route winds through picturesque roads and trails, passing by notable landmarks such as Holdenby House, Althorp Estate (the Spencer family home), and Cottesbrooke Hall.
Each year brings a fresh perspective to the course, with directions changing annually: clockwise on even-numbered years and anti-clockwise on odd-numbered ones. This ensures that every participant experiences something unique each time they take part in this event.

### Ultra Marathon (35 Miles)
Featuring a mix of roads and trails, this endurance-focused course challenges runners with varying terrain. Navigation is required; GPS trackers are provided to assist participants along the way. Five aid stations offer essential supplies like water, snacks, and medical support.
Entry Fee: £60 (£65 on-the-day)
Age Limit: 18+
### Marathon (26.6 Miles)
This multi-terrain course includes a combination of road and trail sections with significant elevation changes—both uphill climbs and downhill descents totaling +1743 ft / -1743 ft. Navigation is partially waymarked, but some segments require independent navigation skills.
Entry Fee: £45 (£50 on-the-day)
Age Limit: 18+
### Three-Quarter Marathon (19.1 Miles)
With a mix of road and trail terrain, this course features an elevation gain and loss totaling +1334 ft / -1334 ft. Navigation is partially waymarked with some sections requiring independent navigation.
Entry Fee: £40 (£45 on-the-day)
Age Limit: 18+
### Half Marathon (13.4 Miles)
A challenging course that combines road and trail, this race features an elevation gain of +897 ft / -897 ft. The route is well-marked with marshals to guide participants.

Age Limit: 17+
### 10K (Road Race)
This undulating course offers a challenging experience, featuring +400 ft / -400 ft elevation changes. Participants will enjoy scenic views as they navigate through the valley and climb back up to finish.

### Charity Option
For those wishing to contribute to a good cause, charity options are available for each distance. A small admin fee of £10 secures entry, with participants committing to raising funds for their chosen charity.
