Silent Night Race

Silent Night is an exhilarating fell race organized by Durham Fell Runners and supported by the Fell Runners Association. This challenging night-time event, which takes place after dark on the summit of Chapelfell Top above St. John’s Chapel, Weardale, offers runners a unique experience that demands both skill and determination.
The course covers 6.6 kilometers with an impressive ascent of 370 meters to reach the summit at 703 meters above sea level. The route is unmarked and runs through rough terrain without clear paths, requiring participants to navigate using their instincts and knowledge of fell racing techniques. While GPS devices are not allowed for navigation purposes, runners may use them to track distance, time, speed, or altitude.
To participate in Silent Night, competitors must provide verifiable proof that they have completed two events involving off-path navigation, such as Mountain Marathons, orienteering competitions, or similar fell racing experiences. This ensures that all participants are well-prepared for the challenging conditions and terrain of Chapelfell Top.
Registration takes place at Chatterbox Cafe in St. John’s Chapel, Weardale (DL13 1QF), with parking available on site. The race starts promptly at 7pm, immersing runners into a dark yet enchanting landscape that tests their physical and mental limits.
Kit requirements for the event are extensive and will be strictly enforced to ensure safety in challenging conditions. Participants should come prepared with appropriate gear suitable for fell racing under night-time circumstances.
