The Survival of the Shawangunks (SOS) is an annual adventure triathlon that has captivated endurance athletes since its inception in 1983. Founded by Don Davis, a seasoned veteran and founder of the New York Triathlete Association, SOS quickly gained recognition for its challenging course through some of the most picturesque landscapes in upstate New York.
Each year, fewer than 200 athletes are granted entry into this coveted event held in September at New Paltz. The race offers an unparalleled blend of natural beauty and rigorous competition, making it one of the world's top adventure triathlons.
The SOS course takes participants on a journey through the scenic highways surrounding the northern ridge of the Shawangunk Mountain Range and Minnewaska State Park. This route features 30 miles of cycling followed by three open-water swims in pristine spring-fed lakes, interspersed with four trail runs totaling nearly 20 miles.
To ensure both athlete safety and adherence to race standards, all competitors must complete either a half distance (70.3) within seven hours or the full distance (140.6) within fifteen hours, within an eighteen-month window leading up to the event date. These stringent requirements highlight the demanding nature of the course while maintaining its integrity as one of the most challenging triathlons in North America.
