Sourton Tors Fell Race 2026

About the Event

Sourton Tors Fell Race - September 12, 2026
Experience the rugged beauty of Dartmoor at Sourton Tors on Saturday, September 12th. This traditional fell race offers a challenging yet accessible course for runners of all abilities, with distances and terrain that cater to both seasoned competitors and enthusiastic newcomers.
The senior event kicks off at 11:15 AM from the moor near Sourton Village Hall, winding its way through nearly 5 kilometers of open moorland. The route ascends a total elevation gain of 276 meters as it climbs up to Sourton Tors before looping back down via the "Lake" valley and returning to the village hall.
Participants will encounter several compulsory checkpoints along the course: near Ice Works, at Trig Point atop Sourton Tors, during the descent to Lake Moorgate, and by a pit southwest of the tors. The race is entirely off-road, offering runners an immersive journey through Dartmoor’s wild landscapes. While challenging, this route remains within reach for most participants.
After crossing the finish line, enjoy refreshments such as tea, coffee, and cakes available near Race Headquarters at Sourton Village Hall (cash only). Alternatively, you can head to The Highwayman Inn for a drink or meal—booking in advance is recommended if you plan on dining there. Parking will be directed by marshals in a nearby farmer’s field.
The event awards prizes to the first male and female finishers as well as age categories. Entry fees are £7.00 for Fell Runners Association members (£8.00 on race day) and £7.50 for non-members (£10.00 on race day). No mementos are provided, keeping entry costs low.
In line with British fell racing traditions, self-navigation is a key component of the experience. While some course markers will be present, runners should expect to navigate independently using maps and compasses if needed. Familiarity with the route beforehand can greatly enhance your performance and enjoyment. Weather-appropriate gear like raincoats and hats are recommended for safety.
Juniors aged 8 and above (with parental permission) also have their own races starting at 10:15 AM, covering either a 2km or 3km loop up the hill depending on age group. These shorter distances offer an easier navigation path marked along the route. On-the-day entries for juniors cost just £1.
Join us in celebrating this classic fell race tradition and immerse yourself in Dartmoor’s natural splendor!
Race Headquarters: Sourton Village Hall, A386 at Sourton (near Okehampton)
