Southern States 200

The Southern States 200 will take place on March 17th, starting from Delta, Alabama and concluding near the summit of Mount Cheaha in the same state. This mountain trail race covers a total distance of 202.41 miles along the Pinhoti Trail, with runners ascending to an elevation of over 2,403 feet at Mt. Cheaha, which is also known as Alabama's highest peak.
The course begins near Dalton in Georgia and meanders through some of the most picturesque terrain east of the Rocky Mountains. Runners will encounter a series of challenging elevations gains throughout their journey, crossing paths with both natural beauty and historical landmarks along the way. The Pinhoti Trail is fully marked with reflective flags and ribbons to ensure clear navigation for all participants.
Established as an annual event since 2015, the Southern States 200 has become a significant milestone in ultra-running circles across Alabama. With up to 300 runners participating each year, this race not only tests physical endurance but also fosters community spirit among long-distance athletes from various backgrounds and skill levels.
The course itself is an extensive trail system that winds through the heart of southern Appalachian forests, providing a rugged yet scenic backdrop for participants. Alongside the Pinhoti Trail are fifteen fully staffed aid stations where runners can rest, refuel with hot meals prepared around-the-clock by dedicated volunteers, and even take short naps in heated tents equipped with sleeping pads and bags.
March weather typically offers firm but slightly soft trail conditions suitable for running shoes rather than heavy footwear. UV index averages at moderate levels (4), suggesting that participants should apply sunscreen to protect against sunburns while out on the course during daylight hours.
The Southern States 200 features a range of options, including both full and partial distance races as well as pacers who support runners over their final hundred miles. Runners can opt for either the 160.9K or the longer 321.9K challenge depending on their endurance level and ambition.
