On October 17, 2026, McAlpine Creek Park will host the tenth anniversary of the Strides for Shelter 5K Run + Walk. This annual race is presented by The Canopy Housing Foundation and benefits Crisis Assistance Ministry, a critical resource for families in Mecklenburg County experiencing financial hardship. This year's event aims to raise funds specifically for the modernization of Crisis Assistance Ministry’s Free Store, enhancing its shopping environment with improved organization, layout, and flow. These upgrades will ensure that individuals can access essential items like clothing, shoes, and household goods more efficiently and comfortably during challenging times. Since 2016, Strides for Shelter has returned over $242,000 to local beneficiaries addressing the needs of homeless individuals in Charlotte. The Canopy Housing Foundation, as the event's sponsor, works towards a community where all housing needs are met through advocacy, education, funding, and leadership. Participants can look forward to receiving race t-shirts with chip timing, swag bags filled with goodies, post-race food and drinks, and engaging children’s activities. Steve Maney, Charlotte radio host and recipient of multiple "Best Morning Show" titles along with the 2026 NCAB “Radio Team of the Year” award, will serve as this year's grand marshal. For more information or to register, contact Stacy Baum at (704) 940-3147 or sbaum@canopyrealtors.com. Join us for a day filled with community spirit and support on October 17th! Runners will enjoy the scenic trails of McAlpine Creek Park while contributing to an important cause that supports local families in need. The race offers a mix of terrain, making it suitable for both runners and walkers alike. This event is not just about completing the distance; it's also about celebrating the impact made possible by community support. Registration includes all necessary amenities such as timed results, refreshments after the run or walk, and interactive activities designed to engage participants of all ages. The atmosphere will be lively with volunteers cheering on every finisher and a festive post-race celebration featuring local vendors and entertainment options for everyone involved.
