ESSEX TRAIL EVENTS is proud to present THE TARMAC TWISTER TRAIL, an exhilarating night race that takes place on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. This unique event offers runners the opportunity to explore Chelmer Village in a whole new light, as they navigate through its winding streets under the glow of street lamps and their own headtorches.
Starting between 6:45 PM and 7:15 PM from Race HQ at Springfield Cricket Club within Coronation Park on Timsons Lane in Chelmsford CM2 6AF, participants will be issued a written route description that guides them through the course. The race is approximately six miles long and requires self-navigation without any markings or marshals along the way. Runners can choose to compete individually or form small groups for added camaraderie.
The trail features all tarmac surfaces, making it ideal for runners of various abilities who are comfortable with night running conditions. A headtorch or hand-held light is essential as participants will need to read their route instructions in low-light settings. Despite the lack of marshals and markings, this race remains a highly social event, where competitors can cheer each other on throughout.
With only 120 spots available, THE TARMAC TWISTER TRAIL has consistently sold out every year since its inception, making it a must-do for trail runners in Essex. Each finisher will receive an exclusive glow-in-the-dark medal and enjoy light refreshments at the event’s conclusion.
Entry fees are £12 for UKA-affiliated athletes and £14 for unaffiliated participants. Online registration closes on October 9, 2026, or when full capacity is reached. Ample parking space will be available near the venue, along with a fully licensed bar and toilet facilities to ensure runners stay comfortable throughout their race experience.
