Experience the Thames Trail Ultra: A 47-Mile Journey Along Britain's Most Iconic River
Are you ready for an epic adventure? The Thames Trail Ultra invites runners to conquer 47 miles of mixed terrain along England’s longest river, from Iffley near Oxford to Henley-on-Thames. This event, formerly known as the Thames Trot, is renowned among ultra-runners and offers a unique blend of stunning scenery, challenging landscapes, and vibrant local communities.
Why Run the Thames Trail Ultra?
Scenic Course: The race route winds through 47 miles of diverse terrain, including smooth tarmac paths and muddy trails. As you follow the Thames Path and Ridgeway National Trails, enjoy panoramic views of picturesque villages, historic houses, and traditional rowing clubs along the river.
UTMB Index Race: This prestigious event is part of the Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) index system in the 50K category. Earn valuable UTMB points while challenging yourself on this scenic course.
New Finish Line Experience: In 2024, runners will cross the finish line at Henley-on-Thames’s YMCA Y Centre, where hot food, showers, and changing facilities await to help you unwind after your long journey.
Well-Supported Event: With five aid stations providing water, snacks, and Go Beyond fruitcake, plus real-time GPS tracking, this race offers everything runners need for a successful day. High-calorie energy bars from Real Meal will keep you fueled throughout the event.
Rewards at Stake: Top male and female finishers receive trophies, while all participants earn medals and exclusive merchandise commemorating their achievement. Capture your journey with an optional Race Day Print service available on race day.

- Start Time: 8:15 AM (Registration opens at 7:00 AM)
- Entry Fee: £70.00 (includes tracker)
- Distance: 47 miles from Iffley to Henley-on-Thames
- Terrain: 40.4 miles of cross-country trails and riverside paths, plus 6.6 miles on roads
- Elevation Gain/Loss: +947 ft / -1053 ft
Key Course Details:
The route begins at Hawkwell House Hotel in Iffley and follows the Thames Path through charming towns and villages before reaching Henley-on-Thames’s YMCA Y Centre. Key updates include a detour around the Donkey Bridge near the finish due to structural issues, and an alternative path around Benson Weir footway.
Aid Stations & Checkpoints:
Five aid stations are strategically placed along the route with water, snacks, Go Beyond fruitcake, and Real Meal energy bars. Toilets are available at checkpoints 1, 4, and 5.
Mandatory Kit List:
All runners must carry essential items such as a fully charged mobile phone (with race director’s contact numbers), power bank for recharging, water bottle or bladder with minimum capacity of 1L, survival blanket, waterproof jacket, whistle, headtorch/body torch, hat/gloves, long-sleeved base layer/fleece top, and debit/credit card. Random kit checks will be conducted before the race.
Registration & Start:
- Registration: Begins at 7:00 AM
- Race Start: 8:15 AM sharp
- Age Limit: Participants must be 18 years or older
Baggage Transfer Service:
For your convenience, baggage transfer is available from start to finish. Pack a warm and dry change of clothes in a bag no larger than 56 x 45 x 25 cm (UK carry-on size).
Travel & Accommodation:
- Accommodation: Options include Airbnb, Hawkwell House Hotel, or nearby hotels.
- Parking: Limited parking available at Iffley; plan accordingly and allow time for registration.
- Train Travel: A courtesy shuttle bus runs from Oxford train station to the start. Alternatively, park in Twyford and catch a train to Oxford.

Iffley is a village in a designated conservation area in Oxfordshire, England. It lies within the boundaries of the city of Oxford, between Cowley and the estates of Rose Hill and Donnington, and in proximity to the River Thames (Isis). A notable feature is its largely unchanged Norman church, St Mary the Virgin, which has a modern stained glass Nativity window designed by John Piper and another window designed by Roger Wagner. The church is a Grade I listed building.
