The Bracken Trail Race returns to Brevard, North Carolina on November 21st, offering runners a rugged course through the heart of wild terrain where ancient chaos ferns carpet the forest floor.
On race morning at dawn, temperatures in Brevard hover around mild conditions typical for early fall. Runners can expect firm and slightly soft trail conditions underfoot with low UV exposure. The setting sun will provide ample light as runners tackle rooty single-track trails that wind through dense fern groves and climb rugged ridgelines.
Established several years ago, the Bracken Trail Race has become a local tradition for serious endurance athletes seeking challenging terrain and scenic views. Participants range from first-time ultra-runners testing their limits to seasoned veterans hunting for adventure in nature’s most demanding classroom. The race supports the preservation of natural trails and encourages community engagement through its tight-knit trail running group.
The course is set on Pinnacle Road, featuring a 7.5-mile loop with total elevation gains that vary by distance: one loop at 1,434 feet for the shorter option, two loops at 2,853 feet for the 25K, and four loops totaling 5,693 feet of ascent for the full 50K. The route includes creek crossings and climbs that challenge runners throughout their journey.
Weather conditions on race day are expected to be mild with firm and slightly soft trail surfaces. UV index is low at around 2.0 (Low), providing a comfortable environment for long-distance running despite potential evening temperatures cooling the trails as the sun sets behind Brevard’s ridgelines.
The Bracken Trail Race offers participants three distinct distance options: a shorter 7.5-mile route with an elevation gain of 1,434 feet; a more challenging 25K covering two loops and gaining 2,853 feet in total ascent; and the ultimate test at 50K, quadrupling both the distance and altitude climbed to reach 5,693 feet over four loops.
