The Cherokee

The Cherokee Ultra returns to Tellico Plains, Tennessee on July 18th, bringing together runners for a challenging mountain course through the heart of the Cherokee National Forest. This year marks the third edition of this premier Southeast ultra event, featuring distances that range from the grueling Waucheesi Challenge at 24 miles to the full 130K journey across rugged terrain and historic paths.
On race morning in Tellico Plains, runners will gather early under clear skies with temperatures ranging between a comfortable low of around 22°C and a warm high near 32°C. The course starts and finishes at Tellico Plains High School, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys as participants tackle steep climbs and river crossings along historic routes like the Unicoi Turnpike.
Since its inception in 2018, the Cherokee Ultra has become an integral part of the running community's calendar, attracting seasoned ultrarunners who seek a unique blend of natural beauty and technical challenges. Each year sees increasing participation numbers as runners vie for awards at the finish line celebration back at Tellico Plains High School. The trail surface is usually hard and dry, though participants should prepare for potential afternoon showers as there's a risk of up to 3 millimeters of rainfall during the day. UV levels are very high at 8.0 on average.

The Cherokee Ultra offers three challenging distances: the full Waucheesi Challenge (24 miles) and two ultra options, including both 70K ($200.00 fee) and 130K ($280.00 fee).

Mandatory gear includes items such as a water filter and headlamp throughout the race duration. Bib pickup is scheduled for July 15th-16th at Tellico Plains High School from 10 AM - 4 PM daily.
