The Great Mud Escape returns to Warren, Rhode Island on September 19th, inviting participants of all ages to dive into a day filled with mud pits, obstacles, and fun for everyone who loves the outdoors. This unique event not only promises an entertaining challenge but also supports Thrive Outside's mission to reconnect children and teens with nature.
Set in the heart of Warren, the Great Mud Escape unfolds against the backdrop of Rhode Island’s lush greenery and rolling hills, where the air is crisp yet welcoming during early fall. The day begins around 11am when participants start arriving at the event site, each wave sent off every five minutes to ensure everyone has a chance to enjoy the course without overcrowding. As families gather in their designated waves, children laugh and play while parents chat with one another, creating an atmosphere of community and shared adventure.
Since its inception, The Great Mud Escape has become a beloved tradition for both locals and visitors alike. Over the years, it has raised significant funds to support Thrive Outside’s critical mission—ensuring that all children have access to nature and outdoor learning opportunities. With each muddy footprint left behind on race day, participants contribute not only to their own sense of joy but also to a larger cause dedicated to nurturing young minds through natural experiences.
The course itself is an exhilarating mix of obstacles designed for fun and challenge across one mile of terrain that includes mud pits and brain teasers. Participants will navigate through various stages set up in the Warren park, where each obstacle presents its own unique test—be it climbing over walls or scrambling through tunnels covered with a layer of gooey mud. The final stretch leads runners to two giant mud pits for an extra splash before crossing the finish line.
Starting and finishing at the designated area within the park, participants can expect a well-organized event layout with aid stations strategically placed along the course. These provide water and other essential supplies as needed throughout the run. With no specific elevation changes but plenty of muddy terrain to navigate, it’s important for runners to wear comfortable shoes they don’t mind getting dirty.
On race day in September, participants can expect cool temperatures ranging from 15.9°C to 22.4°C with an average feel like temperature around 19.1°C and moderate humidity levels at about 80%. There's a slight chance of rain given the typical rainfall data for this period but trails remain firm yet slightly soft underfoot, perfect for those who want to get down and dirty.
