Nestled in the heart of the Peak District, the annual Grindleford Goats Cycle Sportive offers an exhilarating mix of challenging terrain and picturesque scenery for cyclists of all levels. The event began in 2013 as a community-driven initiative to raise funds for the volunteer-run Grindleford Community Shop and has since grown into one of the most beloved cycling events in the region. This year, participants can choose from four distinct routes: The Billy, Nanny, Gruff, and Kid. Each route offers its own unique blend of climbs, descents, and scenic beauty that showcases the best of the Peak District's natural landscapes. The Billy is a grueling 106km ride featuring some of the most demanding climbs in the area, coupled with thrilling descents through stunning countryside. Cyclists will traverse rugged terrain while enjoying breathtaking views along the way. For those seeking a more leisurely tour, the Nanny, at 54km, offers an ideal route for reasonably fit adults and determined juniors under adult supervision. This ride takes in some of the most picturesque scenery in the Peak District, making it perfect for cyclists looking to enjoy the beauty of the region. The Gruff is a dynamic gravel adventure that changes annually, offering riders complete freedom to set their own pace and choose which cafes or hostels they wish to visit along the way. This year's route comes in two lengths: 65km and 80km, with an option for participants to combine both distances. The Kid is a family-friendly mountain bike ride that spans 22km through quiet drove roads and country lanes. It includes a unique section of private trails linking Bank Top and Mag Clough farms, adding an extra layer of excitement for those taking part in this mixed terrain adventure. For the serious cyclist looking to push their limits, The Billy No Mates offers a century ride at 100 miles. This route is carefully curated with 65 miles signed and includes snack stops along the way. The remaining 35 miles are self-supported but still offer guaranteed meal options before and after the ride. All routes start and finish in Grindleford, providing participants with quality barista coffee or a hot drink of their choice at the beginning of the event. Savory rolls, homemade flapjacks, and cakes will be available at feed stations along each route, ensuring riders are well-fueled throughout their journey. The Goat herders, organizers dedicated to ensuring every participant's safety and enjoyment, will remain on hand until all cyclists have returned home safely. This year marks the third consecutive year of a static entry fee, with proceeds going directly to support local community initiatives through the Grindleford Goat Charity. With over 400 participants each year across various age groups and skill levels, this event promises an unforgettable experience for anyone who loves cycling in one of Britain's most beautiful landscapes. Don't miss out on visiting the famously quirky Grindleford Community Shop while you're there – a true highlight of any visit to Grindleford. Register early as spaces are limited to 400 participants and sell out every year, ensuring that all proceeds can go directly towards supporting local community projects in need.
