On Sunday, August 16th, 2026, the Hereford Leisure Centre will host the third annual Jon Ward Hereford 5K race. This event honors the memory of ex-Hereford Courier Jon Ward and continues his legacy as a dedicated runner who competed in distances ranging from 5k to ultra marathons.
The race takes place on a smooth tarmac cycle track within the leisure center, providing runners with an ideal setting for achieving personal bests due to its flat terrain. The route consists of five laps around this fast and challenging course, making it suitable for participants of all skill levels. Runners can expect chip timing, fully marked routes, marshaled support throughout, and a bespoke medal upon completion.
For those unable to attend in person, the virtual Jon Ward 5k offers an alternative from August 8th through August 16th, allowing runners to complete their race at any location of their choice. Participants can submit their times via Strava or email them directly to Hereford Couriers for inclusion in the final results.
Entry fees are £19 (affiliated) and £21 (unattached), with all proceeds going towards charity in memory of Jon Ward. Virtual participants pay a flat rate of £14, which also includes a bespoke finisher’s medal mailed to their home address after completion.
Race day registration opens at 9:30 AM on August 16th for those participating physically; be sure to arrive early as numbers are collected only on the day itself. The race starts promptly at 10:00 AM, offering a competitive yet friendly atmosphere with prizes awarded to the top three male and female finishers.
The Hereford Leisure Centre provides ample parking facilities, ensuring convenient access for all participants. Runners can also opt to purchase an additional JW5K T-shirt during registration; proceeds from these sales will benefit charity as well.
