Turbine Backyard Ultra is an endurance race that challenges runners with its unique format and grueling course. Competitors must complete a 4.1-mile loop exactly on the hour, every hour, until only one runner remains standing. The bell rings precisely at each hour mark, signaling competitors to be present or face disqualification as a DNF (Did Not Finish). The race continues in this manner until just one athlete emerges victorious and is crowned champion. In 2026, Turbine Backyard Ultra introduces a new course that winds through private land, offering runners an exclusive experience. This year also sees the return of team competition from last year's event, where groups can band together to form teams and vie for top honors. Each team’s total distance will be tallied up, with prizes awarded to both individual champions and winning teams. All participants receive commemorative items upon registration and are granted free camping on-site throughout the duration of the race. The venue also provides hot and cold water, tea, coffee, fruit, sweets, and other refreshments for runners and their support crews alike. The course itself is far from flat, featuring approximately 400 feet of elevation gain per loop. It meanders through a mix of farmland, single-track trails, and woodland dirt tracks, making it both challenging and scenic. Runners should be prepared to pace themselves carefully; going too fast might leave them idle at the start line waiting for their next lap, while running too slowly could make subsequent loops more arduous. Since the race takes place on private land, pre-race reconnaissance is not possible. Competitors must come equipped with appropriate attire suitable for changing weather conditions and be prepared to run through both day and night if necessary. A headlamp and extra batteries are strongly recommended for those planning to compete into the early hours of morning or late evening. On-site vendors will offer a variety of refreshments, including cheesecakes and crumbles from Cheese & Crumble Scoops as well as hot and cold drinks, soup, snacks, and cakes provided by The Bramble & Oak Coffee Box. Participants can also opt to purchase XCover insurance for peace of mind in case they need to withdraw due to unforeseen circumstances. Turbine Backyard Ultra is an event that pushes runners to their limits while offering a unique camaraderie among competitors who share the challenge and spirit of endurance racing.
