Runners start near the pavilion behind the nature center at 8 am sharp and navigate a flat gravel loop that is marked clearly by yellow arrows leading them along familiar pathways like Umbrella Tree Trail and Sierra Trail. The atmosphere on race day promises cool autumn breezes, ideal for endurance running.
The Unforeseen has been an annual tradition since its inception in 2024, offering unique challenges each year with the dice roll determining distances ranging from a short but spirited 4.5 miles to a grueling 27-mile trek through Reedy Creek’s scenic trails. The event not only tests runners' physical endurance and mental fortitude but also raises awareness for local conservation efforts by promoting engagement in natural environments.
The Unforeseen's course winds through flat, fast terrain with each lap measuring precisely 2.25 miles along a mix of gravel paths and single-track trails. Starting near the pavilion behind the nature center at Rocky River Road, participants follow marked yellow arrows to navigate seamlessly from one trail junction to another. The aid station is conveniently located back at the starting point where runners can find snacks, water refills, and trash cans for waste disposal.
As November typically brings crisp mornings in Charlotte, North Carolina, race day will likely feature firm yet slightly soft trail conditions underfoot with a low UV index of 2.0, making it an ideal setting to soak up early morning light without concern for sun exposure. Temperatures are expected to range from mild and comfortable during the start hour around 7 am to cooler evening temperatures as runners finish their last lap.
The Unforeseen offers participants two distinct challenges: a Random Distance option with a roll of the dice determining whether you'll run between 4.5 miles up to nearly 27 miles, priced at $25; and for those looking to test themselves over an extended period without knowing how far they might go within six hours, there’s also a 6-Hour challenge available for $40.
