Thunder Mountain, an imposing natural landmark that challenges even the most seasoned runners, is set to debut as the centerpiece of its inaugural Thunder Mountain Challenge this year. The race offers three distinct options: The Bridal 5Kave, a grueling yet rewarding out-and-back course; and two endurance tests—the 3-hour challenge and the 6-hour challenge. The Bridal 5Kave invites runners to tackle approximately three ascents up Thunder Mountain’s steep incline before reaching the finish line at around the traditional 5K mark. Each climb, roughly half a mile long with an elevation gain of about 300 feet, is followed by a descent down the same route. The course primarily consists of asphalt on Bridal Cave Road, with a brief stretch over gravel near its base. For those seeking to push their limits further, the 3-hour and 6-hour challenges offer opportunities for multiple ascents within designated time frames. Runners will check in at an aid station located atop Thunder Mountain after each climb, where officials track their progress towards victory based on total completed climbs. The race window ends with a live scoreboard displaying real-time standings inside the Thunder Mountain Park Event Center. Safety is paramount during these races. Due to open traffic conditions along parts of Bridal Cave Road and near the lower gravel section, runners must stay vigilant for passing vehicles while maintaining control throughout both ascents and descents. No pets or audio devices are permitted on course; all participants must remain alert to their surroundings at all times. Aid stations equipped with water, electrolytes, and other essential supplies will be available exclusively at the peak of Thunder Mountain during each race window. Runners can also drop off personal belongings at designated areas near the start/finish line before setting out for their climbs. Parking is conveniently located in several open-air lots close to both the event center and starting point, encouraging carpooling among participants. The inaugural Thunder Mountain Challenge promises an unforgettable experience for runners eager to test themselves against nature’s formidable terrain while enjoying camaraderie with fellow competitors.
