The Rotary Club of Ely is set to host the second annual Tour de Schell, an exhilarating gravel cycling adventure through Nevada's copper country. Cyclists will find themselves navigating four distinct routes that offer a taste of some of the best gravel terrain in the state. For those seeking a full-day challenge, the Long Distance route stretches 118 miles with 5,438 feet of elevation gain, providing an intense but rewarding experience. The Medium Distance option at 81 miles and 4,084 feet of climbing is perfect for those who want to enjoy stunning landscapes without breaking their stride. Those looking for a more manageable yet still thrilling ride can choose the Short Distance route, covering 64 miles with 3,575 feet of elevation. The Fun Course spans 47 miles and features just 1,556 feet of gain, making it an excellent choice for both casual riders and those new to gravel cycling. Participants will be treated to a weekend filled with western hospitality, from hearty meals and refreshing drinks at the event itself to community activities throughout Ely. The atmosphere is sure to be lively as cyclists enjoy music, local art, and other festivities. Maps and detailed GPS data are available for each route, ensuring that every cyclist can prepare thoroughly. About Ely
Learn more about the host city, Ely.
Ely is the only city in and the county seat of White Pine County, Nevada, United States. Ely was founded as a stagecoach station along the Pony Express and Central Overland Route. In 1906 copper was discovered. Ely's mining boom came later than the other towns along US 50. The railroads connecting the transcontinental railroad to the mines in Austin, Nevada and Eureka, Nevada have long been removed, but the railroad to Ely is preserved as a heritage railway by the Nevada Northern Railway and known as the Ghost Train of Old Ely. As of the 2020 census, the population was 3,924.
