In tribute to Mena, an avid trail runner who loved exploring the countryside for hours on end, The Trails of Mena offers runners a unique and challenging experience along some of her favorite routes. This anti-clockwise circular course weaves through North Wingfield’s diverse landscapes, combining trails, fields, woodlands, and undulating terrain to keep participants engaged throughout. The race begins near North Wingfield Community Resource Centre on Whiteleas Avenue with registration from 8am until 8:45 am for those who wish to enjoy a pre-race meal or coffee. Free parking is available at the resource centre and surrounding estate roads, making it easy for runners to arrive relaxed and ready. Starting promptly at 9am, participants embark on an adventure that takes them along the scenic 5 Pits Trail before heading towards Pilsley and Tibshelf. The route then continues eastward through Teversal and Rowthorne, skirting around Hardwick Hall without entering its grounds. Runners will cross the M1 and traverse the farmland of Sutton Scarsdale and Sutton Springs Wood before retracing parts of their journey back to North Wingfield. The event features two checkpoints for the 20-mile route at Teversal (8 miles) and Sutton Scarsdale (15.5 miles), while marathon runners will encounter an additional checkpoint at Sutton Scarsdale after completing 21.5 miles. Each stop provides essential refreshments, including both sweet and savory food options to keep energy levels up. Medical support is available throughout the course as well as at race HQ for any unexpected needs during the run. Every finisher receives a commemorative medal with special recognition given through prizes awarded to the first male and female in each category. This third edition of The Trails of Mena honors not only Mena’s spirit but also her enduring impact on those who knew her, celebrating her joyous adventures along these trails. While dogs played an integral part in many runs alongside their owners, current insurance regulations prevent canine companions from joining this year's event. Participants have the option to purchase XCover for additional peace of mind regarding potential cancellations due to unforeseen circumstances. The race promises a memorable day out on some of Derbyshire’s most picturesque trails, offering runners an opportunity to connect with nature while paying tribute to Mena and her passion for running. The Trails of Mena invites all levels of runners to experience the beauty and challenge of these beloved routes in North Wingfield, ensuring that each step taken is a celebration of life's simple joys.
