About the Event

The Tromsø Mountain Challenge (TMC) invites runners to experience late August’s breathtaking mountain landscapes with an array of races designed for all levels. The weekend kicks off on Saturday with three distinct events: the TMC Dalheim Rundt, a 8km trail run; the HalfUltra at 25K; and the flagship Tromsø Mountain Ultra covering a grueling 50 kilometers.
For those who choose to tackle the 50K distance, an early morning bus ride takes them from Tromsdalen up into Snarbyeidet. Here, runners face rugged terrain that winds through active reindeer herding districts with views of pristine Arctic landscapes stretching out in every direction. As they reach halfway, participants from both the HalfUltra and the 50K races converge on a challenging ascent before splitting paths once more.
The unique setting allows for an immersive experience as runners trace historical routes used by Sami people for centuries to herd reindeer through these mountains. The terrain is varied, featuring steep climbs and descents that test endurance while offering panoramic views of Tromsdalen’s valley nestled between towering peaks.
Sunday brings the TMC Extreem Race, a 2.4K uphill challenge along Sharpa Stairs, constructed by skilled Sherpas from Nepal to connect the lower part of town with the cable car station at an elevation of 420 meters above sea level. This race is both a physical and mental test as runners push through steep inclines.
