Now entering its 14th year, the Wharfedale Three Peaks Challenge is a beloved annual charity event hosted by the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association. Held in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales village of Kettlewell, this scenic race offers participants an array of routes catering to all ages and fitness levels. The main attractions are two challenging mountain courses: the Three Peaks route at 17 miles with a total elevation gain of 3800 feet, taking runners through Firth Fell, Buckden Pike, and Great Whernside; and the Two Peaks route spanning 13 miles with an ascent of 2500 feet across Buckden Pike and Great Whernside. Both routes feature breathtaking views over Upper Wharfedale’s rugged terrain. For those seeking a more leisurely experience, there's also the Family Walk—a gentle 4.5-mile stroll along the River Wharfe that culminates with spectacular vistas from the ‘Paradise Walk’. This walk is perfect for families and casual hikers looking to enjoy the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales without the intensity. Registration begins at 7:00 AM for both mountain routes, starting promptly at 8:30 AM. The Family Walk registration starts later at 9:00 AM with a start time of 10:15 AM. Water stations are strategically placed along Buckden village and Tor Dike/Park Rash road crossing. However, participants should bring their own water containers for the duration of the event. Entry fees cover parking, refreshments such as pies and pasties, tea, and coffee at the finish line. Additional beverages will be available for purchase on-site alongside a delightful cake stall whose proceeds benefit the rescue team's operational costs. The Three Peaks route boasts an impressive course record set by Oli Murphy in 2024 with a time of just over two hours, while Kate Archer holds the women’s record at 2:52. The Two Peaks route sees Paul Carman as its fastest finisher and Emma Hopkinson leading among female competitors. While dogs are not permitted on any routes except for the Family Walk, there will be opportunities to see Landrovers and rescue equipment up close once you reach Kettlewell village. Join us in celebrating a day of camaraderie, breathtaking views, and supporting an essential local service.
