Vale Coastal Trail Races: A Spectacular Run Along Wales' Scenic Coastline
Experience the breathtaking beauty of the Vale of Glamorgan's coastline as you embark on one of three challenging trail races. The 12th edition of this beloved event offers runners a unique blend of stunning natural scenery, rugged terrain, and exhilarating coastal views.
Ultra Race (32.5 miles)
The Ultra race is an epic journey that takes participants along the entire coast of the Vale of Glamorgan from Penarth Pier to Ogmore-by-sea beach car park. Starting at 9:00 AM on April 24, 2027, runners will traverse nearly two dozen hidden bays and beaches while enjoying uninterrupted views of dramatic cliffs and rolling countryside along the Wales Coastal Path.
Vale Trail 18.5 (18.5 miles)
Joining the Ultra route after a scenic start at Porthkerry Park in Barry, this race begins at 10:45 AM on April 24th. Runners will enjoy the same breathtaking coastal scenery and rugged terrain as their longer-distance counterparts but with slightly fewer checkpoints.
Vale Trail 10 (10 miles)
The shortest of the three races starts promptly at 11:00 AM from Llantwit Major Beach, allowing participants to experience a taste of the stunning coastline while enjoying a more manageable distance. This route joins both longer courses as they pass through picturesque coastal areas.
Route Details
Each race follows well-marked sections of the Wales Coastal Path along cliffs and beaches, offering breathtaking views at every turn. The Ultra and 18.5-mile races hug the cliff tops for much of their routes, while the shorter trail provides a mix of clifftop running and beachside paths.
Checkpoints
All three courses feature strategically placed checkpoints where runners can replenish with water, energy drinks, snacks, fruits, and other essentials to keep them fueled throughout the race.
Transportation
Participants in all races have the option to be transported from Ogmore-by-sea car park to their respective start points via buses provided by the event organizers. Registration for these services is required at sign-up.
Timetable Highlights
Registration begins on Friday, April 21st, and continues through Saturday morning until each race's starting time. Briefings are held just before each race’s start, ensuring all participants understand course details and safety measures.

Each entry includes electronic timing with immediate results available post-race, emergency first aid coverage, race photos provided by Tosh, and a finisher’s medal.
