WEEKLY BACK COVE SERIES 2026

About the Event

The Weekly Back Cove Series 2026 returns to Portland, Maine on August 26th, requiring a flat $50 donation for each race in the series or any single point of participation.
BACK COVE SERIES 5K
5km  •  Start: 18:00:00  •  Fee: $55.49
This event takes place along the scenic waterfront at Back Cove Park. On race morning, runners can expect the familiar sights and sounds of Portland's coastal neighborhood, with the park’s lush greenery providing a backdrop against the city skyline. As the sun rises over the harbor, participants will find themselves running through the cool, salty air that permeates this area.
For years now, the Back Cove Series has been a cornerstone of Portland’s summer calendar. The series began in 2013 and continues to grow with every passing year, attracting hundreds of runners who are dedicated to supporting local trails and youth running programs. This race is more than just a run; it's an opportunity for community members to come together under the banner of fitness and philanthropy.
The course venue offers a challenging yet rewarding route through Back Cove Park. The terrain alternates between soft, gravel paths and smooth asphalt streets, ensuring that runners experience variety throughout their journey. Notable features include the scenic path by the waterfront where participants can enjoy sweeping views as they run alongside the cove’s natural beauty.
Race morning begins with runners gathering at 5:15 pm for bib pickup before heading to the start line at 6 pm. The course layout is straightforward, with a gradual incline leading towards the finish line. There are no formal aid stations but water points will be available near key sections of the route as needed.
Weather conditions on race day in August can vary from mild to warm, with an average temperature around 20.8°C and humidity levels at 74%. The wind speed is typically moderate at 9.3 km/h, which means runners should expect a slight breeze that may affect their pace slightly but won't be too challenging. To register for the series, visit https://raceroster.com/events/2026/117193/weekly-back-cove-series-2026. Bibs can be picked up from May 20th at 10 am until Wednesday, May 27th at 4 pm during store hours or before each race from 5:15 to the start time of 6 pm.
Runners should note that they will need a valid WBCS number for the entire summer series and must visibly wear it. Registration is mandatory by checking in online prior to each event, with check-in opening on Saturday at 8 am until Wednesday at 2 pm or when capacity reaches 250 participants. For those unable to attend these times, Marathon Sports-Portland offers a casual group run post-race.
The Weekly Back Cove Series 2026 is well worth attending for its unique blend of fitness and community service. Running through Portland's stunning waterfront on this series will not only benefit the local trails but also foster a sense of camaraderie among participants.
