Experience the vibrant colors of fall as you run through the picturesque West Elk Mountains during The West Elk Challenge. This trail marathon offers breathtaking views and challenging terrain, perfect for both experienced runners and casual hikers. The 26.2-mile marathon begins at Crawford Reservoir State Park, where runners will traverse gravel roads that wind through scenic farmlands and ranches beneath the towering Needle Rock. As you ascend into Gunnison National Forest, the trail transforms into a singletrack path lined with golden aspen trees on the slopes of Mt. Lamborn. After about 5 miles of climbing, participants reach the summit at Inter-Ocean Pass (9,762 feet), offering panoramic views before descending through spruce, aspen, and oak forests to finish in the charming town of Paonia. For those seeking a shorter but equally rewarding experience, The West Elk Challenge also offers a 30K option. This race starts from Needle Rock, following similar singletrack trails that climb up Inter-Ocean Pass and then descend into Paonia. Both races offer extensive sections on well-marked single-track paths, providing a true mountain running experience. To ensure everyone’s convenience, free shuttles are available for participants of the 30K race. Shuttle services run from Paonia to both starting lines at Crawford Reservoir State Park and Needle Rock (if chosen). Post-race, shuttles will transport runners back to Crawford Reservoir State Park if they prefer not to drive. Please note that a $10 park fee is required for self-driving participants heading to Crawford Reservoir State Park. This event supports the Nature Connection’s Scholarship Fund, aiming to encourage outdoor exploration among children and families. Interactive course maps are available online for both marathon and 30K routes, allowing runners to plan their strategies before setting off on this autumnal adventure in the West Elk Mountains.
