The Great Barrow Challenge invites runners of all levels to explore diverse landscapes across Suffolk for 10 consecutive days at the Suffolk Running Centre, located on Church Road in Bury St Edmunds (IP29 5AX). Each day presents a unique route designed to cater to individual preferences and pacing. On Day Five, participants will experience the Dalham Kiln Half Route. This challenging course offers runners a mix of road and trail running with an elevation gain of 191 meters over its 21.4-kilometer loop (13.3 miles). The route starts from the campsite and features nearly 88% paved roads, complemented by scenic trails making up the remaining 12%. Runners tackling a half marathon will complete one lap, while those aiming for full marathons or ultra distances will have the option to loop twice before heading back via designated turnpoints for shorter races. For runners taking on the 5k and 10k options, this day provides an opportunity to explore part of the larger route before retracing their steps. A downloadable GPX file from the "course" tab offers detailed mapping information for all participants. The event includes a race headquarters equipped with water stations at key points along each course, ensuring runners stay hydrated and energized throughout their journey. Bespoke medals are awarded to every participant upon completion of their chosen distance on any given day. Parking is included in your entry fee, providing easy access to the start line without additional costs. The event promotes sustainability by going cupless; therefore, participants are encouraged to bring reusable bottles or cups for refills at water stations along each route. Safety measures include restrictions on dogs and buggies due to open traffic conditions, as well as a ban on headphones except bone conduction models. These rules ensure that all runners remain alert and aware of their surroundings throughout the event. Virtual participation is also available through Zig Zag Running's website shop section for those unable to join in person but still wish to contribute or compete remotely. This inclusive approach allows everyone to enjoy the spirit of The Great Barrow Challenge, no matter where they are based. Join us at Suffolk Running Centre and experience the beauty and challenge of Suffolk’s terrain as you connect with fellow runners from around the world during this unique 10-day running series.
