The Great Barrow Challenge invites runners of all levels to explore the scenic landscapes around Suffolk for ten unforgettable days. This unique series offers individual day entries, allowing participants to choose their preferred distance and pace from 5k, 10k, half marathon, full marathon, or ultra distances. On Day Seven, the event focuses on a challenging yet rewarding route named Chevington, which winds through picturesque countryside near Bury St Edmunds. The course is a loop starting at Suffolk Running Centre located on Church Road in IP29 5AX and covers a distance of 21.1 kilometers (13.1 miles). Approximately two-thirds of the route follows roads while the remaining third ventures onto trails, offering runners both tarmac sections and softer paths through nature. The elevation profile is notable for its gradual climb to reach a high point at halfway before descending back towards the finish line. The total ascent measures 127 meters (416 feet), ranging from an altitude of 65 meters (213 feet) at its lowest point to 122 meters (400 feet) at its highest. Participants can opt for a single loop if they're tackling the half marathon, while full marathons require two loops. Ultra runners will complete twice around the course and then head towards either the 5k or 10k turnpoint before returning to Suffolk Running Centre. Those choosing shorter distances are directed to specific turnpoints where they retrace their steps back. A GPX file is available for download from the "course" tab on the event website, allowing runners to familiarize themselves with every twist and turn of this varied terrain. The race base camp at the start/finish line provides essential amenities such as water stations throughout the course, ensuring that participants stay hydrated during their journey. Each day concludes with a bespoke medal awarded to all finishers, celebrating their achievement in style. To minimize waste, participants are encouraged to bring reusable bottles or cups for refills at aid stations along the route. Additionally, dogs and buggies are not permitted on this particular course due to safety concerns related to open roads. For those unable to join us physically but still wish to participate virtually, Zig Zag Running offers an online platform where runners can log their efforts from anywhere in the world. Participants should visit the event's shop section for more information regarding virtual entry options and other merchandise available during this special series.
