About the Event

The Great Barrow Challenge invites runners of all abilities to explore the scenic landscapes around Suffolk for ten days of thrilling competition. On Day Nine, participants will head to Gallops Half Route, an out-and-back course that stretches 21.1 kilometers (13.1 miles) from the campsite at Suffolk Running Centre on Church Road in Bury St Edmunds.
The route is a mix of road and trail running, with 60% of the distance covered on roads and 40% on trails. The terrain offers varied elevation changes, reaching up to 126 meters (high) and dropping down to as low as 41 meters along the way.
Runners choosing the half marathon option will head out to a designated turnaround point before retracing their steps back to the base camp at Suffolk Running Centre. Marathon runners can double this route for an epic full marathon experience, while ultra-marathon enthusiasts have the flexibility to extend even further by adding either the 5k or 10k turnpoints.
The race offers a social and supportive atmosphere with water and aid stations available along the way at the base camp location. Each day concludes with a bespoke medal awarded to all participants who cross the finish line, celebrating their achievement with unique recognition for this special event series.
For those unable to join in person, virtual participation is also an option through Zig Zag Running's website shop section where runners can log and submit their times from anywhere around the globe. Participants are reminded that no dogs or buggies are allowed on this route due to safety concerns regarding open roads, and headphones except for bone conduction models must be avoided.
Parking at the race venue is included in your entry fee, making it convenient for all competitors to start and finish their journey right from Suffolk Running Centre. The event encourages runners to bring reusable bottles or cups as part of its "cupless" initiative aimed at reducing waste during races.
