Holmfirth Surround Loop Challenge invites you to explore the diverse landscapes around Holmfirth with three distinct loop options, each offering unique terrain and scenery. Participants can choose from Loop A (18.5km), Loop B (11.5km), or Loop C (6.7km) based on their preference and stamina. The challenge requires participants to complete loops in ascending order of length – starting with the longest loop first, followed by any combination until reaching the shortest loop last. This ensures safety as course marshals conduct sweeps after each segment's cutoff times: 2:00 PM for Loop B and 3:30 PM for Loop C. Registration begins at Brockholes Village Hall in Holmfirth (HD9 7EB) from 7:30 AM, with a mass start at 8:30 AM. A mandatory safety briefing is held promptly at 8:20 AM below the ramp leading to the hall. Entry fees are £12 for LDWA members and £15 for non-members in advance, increasing to £20 on the day (cash only). Children under 16 participate free but must be accompanied by an adult. Dogs are welcome but must remain under control at all times. The event features a comprehensive catering service with tea and toast upon registration, snacks and cold drinks between loops, and a meal at the finish line along with a certificate of completion for every participant. Participants should bring their own mugs to minimize waste. Given the moorland terrain, urban areas, and road sections, coupled with early winter conditions that may include poor visibility and inclement weather, essential equipment includes waterproof clothing, spare tops, appropriate footwear, head or hand torches (with extra batteries), a first aid kit, compass, whistle, survival bag, route description, and map. Electronic maps are acceptable if they have sufficient battery life. Special dietary needs beyond basic vegetarian options should be communicated to the organizers prior to the event for proper arrangements. While efforts will be made to accommodate various diets, no guarantees can be given regarding allergens in provided meals due to catering constraints. Participants who need to retire early must do so at designated checkpoints where marshals are stationed. Marshals also reserve the right to withdraw any participant if their fitness level or schedule falls below acceptable standards for safety reasons. The Holmfirth Surround Loop Challenge promises an engaging and scenic experience, perfect for seasoned walkers and runners looking to test themselves against varied terrain under winter conditions.
