Nine Edges Endurance: A 20-Year Tradition of Fundraising for Mountain Rescue Join the Edale Mountain Rescue Team's Nine Edges Endurance, celebrating its milestone 20th anniversary on September 12, 2026. This challenging off-road event takes place in the rugged beauty of the Peak District National Park and offers participants a unique blend of physical prowess and technical skill. The route spans approximately 20 miles with nearly 900 meters of elevation gain as it winds through some of Derbyshire’s most iconic gritstone edges, including Derwent Edge, Stanage Edge, Burbage North, Froggatt Edges, Curbar Edge, Baslow Edge, Gardom's Edge, and Birchen Edge. Participants will traverse rough moorland terrain and navigate rugged landscapes that require a degree of navigational ability to reach the finish line at the Robin Hood Inn near Baslow. Choose your challenge: walk, run, or climb. While all paths largely follow the same route, climbers have the added option of choosing their own ascent on each edge. The running event is sanctioned by the Fell Runners Association (FRA), which provides essential public and product liability insurance for participants. Walkers and climbers receive similar safety support from Mountain Rescue England and Wales. Entry fees are set at £35 per participant, with a donation included to benefit the Peak District National Park Foundation. This fee also covers refreshments at various marshal points along the route and a celebratory drink upon completion of your journey back at Fairholmes. The event is designed for experienced individuals aged 18 or older who are familiar with navigation techniques using traditional maps and compasses, as GPS devices are not permitted during competition hours. Dogs can accompany walkers and climbers on leashes but must remain under control throughout the course. Participants have until August to secure their spot; however, due to high demand, new entries will be placed on a waiting list without payment required at this stage. Should an entry become available for you via email notification from organizers, you’ll need to complete your registration and pay within 48 hours of receiving that invitation. Sponsors are encouraged through JustGiving campaigns or direct contact with the Edale Mountain Rescue Team’s fundraising team. Your efforts help support vital emergency services provided by volunteers in this critical region. To mark its anniversary year, a special T-shirt designed by frequent competitor Saul will be available for an additional £9 during entry registration. This limited edition shirt promises to highlight both the 70th birthday of Edale Mountain Rescue Team and the event’s own milestone achievement. For more detailed route information or to familiarize yourself with safety guidelines provided by the FRA, visit their website at www.fellrunner.org.uk. Remember that adherence to these rules is crucial for maintaining personal and public safety throughout this demanding endurance challenge in one of England's most picturesque natural settings. Join us as we celebrate resilience, community spirit, and a deep connection to nature through the 20th Nine Edges Endurance event!
