In the heart of England, the Bullock Smithy Hike / Ultra 56 is set to celebrate its golden anniversary in 2026. Organized by the dedicated volunteers at 3rd Hazel Grove Scout Group, this iconic event invites hikers and ultra-runners alike to traverse a challenging 56-mile circular route that begins and ends in the charming village of Hazel Grove. Participants will encounter an array of natural landscapes as they make their way through checkpoints across various towns and villages. The journey starts at Bowstones and continues on to Chinley Churn, Edale Cross, Edale, Castleton, Peak Forest, Millers Dale, Chelmorton, Earl Sterndale, Brand Top, Wildboarclough, Rainow, Whiteley Green, before returning home in Hazel Grove. With checkpoints strategically placed along the way, each location marks a significant point on this historic trail. The event promises an unparalleled experience with refreshments provided at every checkpoint to keep participants energized throughout their journey. Upon reaching the finish line, hikers and runners are greeted not only by the camaraderie of fellow adventurers but also by a hearty Full English breakfast and a timed certificate commemorating their achievement. This year's 50th anniversary edition includes an exclusive keepsake available for purchase later in the year. To ensure safety and success on this unmarked course, participants must bring essential equipment such as a map, compass, torch with spare batteries, whistle, waterproof clothing, suitable footwear, and sufficient food and water supplies. It is highly recommended to reccy (reconnaissance) sections of the route during daylight hours that will be navigated in darkness. The Bullock Smithy Hike / Ultra 56 offers a unique blend of history, camaraderie, and personal challenge for those who are up for an unforgettable adventure through some of England's most scenic countryside. With no guarantees of entry beyond July, interested participants can secure their place on the waiting list by registering online. Join this legendary event as it marks half a century of inspiring hikers and runners to push their limits while immersing themselves in nature’s beauty.
