Beecraigs Backyard Ultra: How Far Will You Go? Returning to Beecraigs Country Park, West Lothian on Saturday 24th April 2027, this endurance challenge is set against the backdrop of Scotland's stunning Bathgate Hills. Last year’s event saw Craig McQueen complete an impressive 34 loops, totaling a staggering 142 miles through forest and lochside trails. The Beecraigs Backyard Ultra invites runners to push their limits in a unique format where every hour marks both the beginning and end of each lap. The course is a consistent loop of 4.167 miles (6.7km) with approximately 150 meters of elevation gain, weaving through forest trails, gravel paths, and undulating woodland tracks. The race starts promptly at 11:00am, following the traditional Beecraigs ritual where the Race Director takes a bite from a banana to kick things off. Each runner must complete their lap within an hour or be disqualified. The event continues until only one person remains on the course, with everyone else receiving a finisher's medal regardless of when they drop out. Participants will camp in designated areas provided by Beecraigs Country Park and can enjoy hot water, tea, coffee, and basic snacks while adhering to strict environmental policies such as reusable cups for all beverages. The race venue offers easy access to toilets located near the start line, ensuring runners stay on course unless needing essential bathroom breaks. Camping facilities include a space for each runner’s tent or small shelter with restrictions against open flames and camping stoves due to park safety regulations. Additional parking is limited within the park; therefore, planning ahead for crew support vehicles is advised. Race day starts early at 7:00am when the venue opens for registration and setup. A race briefing takes place at 10:30am to ensure all participants are well-prepared before the event begins. The Beecraigs Backyard Ultra adheres closely to global standards of this challenging format, offering an exhilarating experience that tests both mental fortitude and physical endurance. Every participant receives a finisher's medal upon completion or withdrawal from the race. Special recognition goes to the Last One Standing who must complete their final lap solo to claim victory along with a trophy and free entry into next year’s event. The runner in second place, known as "the Assist," also earns a prize for pushing the champion to their limits. Beecraigs Country Park provides an idyllic setting amidst Scotland's Central Belt, offering runners a chance to experience diverse weather conditions from crisp spring mornings to dark night loops under starlit skies. This event is not just about covering distance but enduring time and testing oneself against formidable competitors in one of the most demanding formats in ultrarunning. Join us at Beecraigs Backyard Ultra for an unforgettable day of running, camaraderie, and personal achievement.
