Chapelfell Top Fell Race

Chapelfell Top is an exhilarating fell race that challenges runners with its rugged terrain and steep ascents. Spanning 7 kilometers, this out-and-back route offers a diverse landscape of tough fell ground, a formidable climb to the summit at 700 meters elevation, followed by a thrilling descent.
The event begins promptly at 7:30 PM from St John’s Chapel in Weardale and immediately heads up Chapelfell Top. Initially following a track, runners soon venture onto open fell terrain, navigating rough ground until reaching the peak before retracing their steps back down the same route. Participants must possess solid experience with fell running to handle the challenging conditions and navigate through unmarked sections of the course.
Registration opens at 6 PM where competitors can collect their race numbers and a map detailing the route, which is also available for download from the official website. Runners are advised to park considerately in the village and enjoy refreshments before or after the event at the Chatterbox Cafe located nearby.
Organized by Durham Fell Runners with support from the Fell Running Association (FRA), this race encourages participants to join FRA not only to receive discounts on future entries but also to contribute to the organization’s efforts.
