Crystal Cove Trail Run

The Crystal Cove Trail Run takes place in Newport Beach, California on December 12th, 2026 as the grand finale of the SoCalTrail season. The event features three distances: a challenging El Moro 15k and Cut-Across 6k for adults, along with a Kids 1K race for younger participants. Race day starts early in Newport Beach at Crystal Cove State Park where runners will experience some of Orange County's most pristine trail conditions.
On the morning of December 12th, temperatures are expected to be mild but brisk, around 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit with a low UV index and minimal humidity. The park opens for parking at 5:30am as early birds prepare their gear and warm up before dawn breaks over the coastline just minutes from the start line. The atmosphere is one of camaraderie among trail runners who have been training all season, now gathered to compete in this final race of the year.
The Crystal Cove Trail Run has become a beloved tradition for SoCalTrail participants since its inception several years ago. Each year sees an increase in attendance as word spreads about the challenging course and generous prize money available at the 15k distance. The event supports Vision For Enrichment, which provides sports massage services to all runners post-race. Additionally, a portion of registration fees go towards local conservation efforts to maintain these beautiful trails for future generations.
The El Moro 15k winds through Crystal Cove State Park's rugged terrain featuring steep fire road climbs and descents along scenic ridgelines punctuated by technical single-track sections that test every runner’s skill level. Aid stations are strategically placed throughout the route providing water, Skratch Hydration mixtures, and energy gels to help runners maintain their pace through challenging stretches like "The Rock Garden", "Elevator" climb and "The Wall". Meanwhile, the 6k course offers a condensed version of these features over half the distance with one aid station.
Weather conditions on race day are expected to be firm yet slightly soft trail conditions, making for ideal running underfoot. UV index is predicted at low levels allowing runners to enjoy their run without excessive sun exposure concerns. Temperatures will range from around 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the morning hours with winds remaining calm and little chance of precipitation.
