Dawn Deer Rut Hike - Ullswater

Immerse yourself in the enchanting sounds and sights of autumn at Ullswater and Martindale, where the bellowing red deer rut is a captivating spectacle. This hidden gem offers an intimate connection with nature as you listen to the echoing calls of stags amidst the stunning Lake District scenery.
Starting from Hartsop early on October 8th, your journey will take you along Angle Tarn and Bedfell towards Bannerdale, where the terrain includes easy rocky sections and boggy areas. The route is approximately 10km-12km long with an ascent of 400m to 600m, depending on weather conditions.
Your day begins at 5:30am in Glenridding Steamer Pier (CA11 0US), where you'll hike through the misty morning until around noon. Along the way, experienced guides will point out prime spots for observing red deer and their rutting behavior. A mid-morning stop allows time to enjoy a packed breakfast while listening to the distant calls of stags.
The day concludes with an optional boat ride on Ullswater Steamers from Howtown back to Glenridding (additional cost £11:50, subject to weather conditions). If high winds prevent steamers from operating, you’ll instead travel by car share around to Howtown.
This easy fell walk requires sturdy footwear and appropriate attire for the unpredictable autumn climate. Warm layers, waterproofs, and a good pair of walking boots are essential. The event organizers will provide binoculars on loan or offer them for purchase if you wish to capture every detail of this natural wonder.
